Website Project!

Overview

This project was meant to try and teach us the fundamentals of creating a website and web design because we would not get much exposure to it throughout the year before we make our decisions about our e-Comm classes for sophomore year. In this project we used Dreamweaver to create our own website with instruction from videos by Mr. Olson. The videos were very helpful in giving us the step-by-step of how to create a website and basic knowledge we may need to know for the future regarding the software and web design in general. Our website was very basic and consisted of two pages: home and projects. Our home page had our picture and our
elevator pitch while our project page had our projects we had created throughout the semester.

What did I Learn

In this project I learned about the basics of web design and how to create my own website. Some of the steps were very complicated but I think I followed them pretty while although I did not finish all the way. We also learned about how to use Dreamweaver and it is one of the hardest softwares I have used throughout the semester. It seemed kind of complex but maybe I will be able to learn about it more in the future on my own.

How did I do?

I felt like I did pretty well on this project. I did not end up finishing all of the instructional videos but I am still happy with myself and what I ended up getting done. The software we used, Dreamweaver, was not always compliant with what I wanted to do at the time, but I am still thankful I got to use and learn more about it. Some of my pictures would not show up on my live website like they would in Dreamweaver. Also I was never able to complete my color scheme so my website is still in the basic grey color it was when I started. I could have done a lot more with this project but am still very happy with what I got done considering the complications I had with the software and time limit.

MY LOGO!

PICTURES *Note: Some of my pictures can be difficult to see.

Final Logo Design
PROCESS
I started out just drawing mindlessly on a piece of scratch paper. I sketched ideas and some looked good while others not so good, but in the end I found the logo design that I thought was right for me. Afterwards when I started using Adobe Illustrator I found out that I wasn't really happy with my design and so I changed the style of the wings to make me feel more confident with it. After I had gotten my basic outline I opened a new document and started trying out different colors to go with my design and blue happened to be the one I thought most fit with my personality. I chose my font around this time as well and that aspect was pretty easy to decide on. After I had completed my project I was very happy with how my logo design turned out and I am proud of myself for creating it.

PHILOSOPHY BEHIND MY LOGO-WHY?

When I originally created the logo I didn't think much about what it all meant. After a little time I realized why and how I designed my logo and I feel that it really represents who I am. First of all I designed my logo around a circle because I feel like most of the time I try to be a perfectionist and circles can represent the strive to be perfect (trying to create a "perfect circle" even though it's technically impossible.) Secondly, the wings on my design were my interpretation of me favoring independence. I enjoy being independent and doing my own thing even though sometimes I do have to rely on the help of others even when I don't want to. The font of my logo was chosen simply because my handwriting is generally a mix between cursive and block letters as is the style of this font. Lastly, the gradient on my logo does not have any special meaning but the color I chose, Blue, symbolizes my calm nature, my trust in myself and others, and my love for the sea.

ELEAVATOR PITCH

ELEVATOR PITCH

My name is Cole and I am really interested in possibly working for you in the future. I am analytical and strategic, working really hard to solve problems that I have or that other people have. I am very focused on my work what ever it may be and do whatever I can to make sure the job gets done efficiently and accurately. I’m also a very imaginative and creative person who can create a lot of interesting things like designs pretty easily without much effort. I also enjoy it very much so I am always motivated to create new things anywhere I am all the time. I don’t think I am the best at drawing but my artistic abilities are good enough to where I can create what I have in my mind and make it work on paper. Usually my designs are a bit simplistic and I find that nice. I also am pretty good at understanding people and am a fairly sympathetic person which I think could be a good quality.

CARP- Oz Poster Project

CARP Project

Contrast

  • The red letters against the yellow and green background make the letters stand out more and are easier to read.
  • The contrast between the black border and the yellow picture to make the picture stand out and be more visible.

Alignment
  • I aligned the title and show information to make it seem more organized and easy to read for people who are interested in the poster.

Repetition

  • I tried to repeat colors a lot in my poster. I reused the color red for the title and the show information and I also reused the colors yellow and green to match the background of the poster.

Proximity

I used spacing on my show information to make it look more appealing to the eye but, I also used spacing throughout the whole poster as well. I did this to make the poster seem less scrunched together and look more professional.

Typography

TYPOGRAPHY

What We Did?

For this project we had to use Adobe Illustrator to dissect and label the parts of font. We had to study the parts of font and understand what they were and why they are important. We wrote our names and then chose ten different parts of font and label them on our names. This project helped us get more equipped with using Adobe Illustrator as well as introduce us to something that will be a big factor in many of our future e-comm projects.

What Did We Learn?

During this project we learned about the different types of font categories: serif, sans-serif, & decorative, and we learned about the different sections/parts of font. Serifs are the little extra pieces or feet/tails per say on letters in font. Sans-serif is more basic and does not include serifs. Decorative is a very diverse range of fonts and is usually used for more informal purposes. There are also many different parts of font including the spine, crossbar, x-height, base line, finial, etc. This project really helped me get a grasp on the basics of using Adobe Illustrator and hopefully my future projects will be even better.

How It Went?

I felt like this assignment went fairly well. Although, there was some complications when I was still trying to figure out all the different aspects of Adobe Illustrator everything after that went very nicely. I learned about the software and am ready to put my skills to use on the next project we do in Adobe Illustrator. Learning about the different types of font and font parts was really interesting; I never knew font had so parts to it. I'm glad we got to do this project and I am excited to see what kind of things we do next.

Color Schemes of Logos

                                                     Analogous.

This logo uses the colors green, green-yellow and yellow which are right next to each other on the color wheel. I believe BP decided to use this logo to seem like they care about environmental health and the earth which is ironic considering what they went through in 2010.

This logo uses the colors red and orange. I believe Master Card used this logo to show strength and positivity. The colors on the logo could make someone happy because of the psychology behind
orange.

Complementary.

This logo uses the colors purple and gold. I believe that Hallmark chose this logo to try and represent the quality of their products and show why you should shop at their store.

This FedEx logo used the colors orange and blue. I believe they wanted to try and show a contrast between the colors to represent they are a well-rounded company.

Warm Colors.

This company used the warm colors yellow and red in their logo. I believe Shell used these colors to try and show that they are a strong and friendly company so people will want to purchase oil and gas from them.

This restaurant chain, Denny's, used the colors red and yellow just like Shell. I believe they used these colors to make people think they are a welcoming restaurant. The bright colors make people think positively and can bring in more customers.

Cool Colors.

Skype used the color blue in their logo. I believe they used this color to show customers that they can relax when they are using Skype and just have conversations with no hassle.

This company used the colors blue and dark blue in their logo. I think they used these colors to try and make people think they are trustworthy and relaxed. The blue represents the ocean or water and probably means peacefulness or calmness.

Monochromatic.

This company used red for their monochromatic color scheme. I believe Summit Media used these colors to show their strength and determination. They wanted to show they cared about their listeners and viewers and are passionate about what they do.

Animal Planet uses a green monochromatic color scheme for their logo. Animal Planet probably used these colors to promote their devotion to nature and the Earth. They are ambitious about educating people about the world we live in.

                                            Triad Color

The Burger King logo used the triad color scheme of red, yellow, and blue. I don't really believe the yellow and red represent anything about the company in terms of personality. The yellow I believe represents a bread bun and the red represents meat. The blue could symbolize trust in the restaurant or the restaurant's loyalty to their customers.

The Superman logo uses the same triad color scheme as the Burger King logo: red, yellow, and blue. I believe the red represents Superman's strength and determination, the yellow represents Superman's positive attitude and intellect, and the blue represents the trust citizens have in him and the loyalty he has to the citizens.

Color Wheel

Color Wheel Project!

What was the project?

The goal of our project was to create and label a color wheel in Adobe Illustrator. We had to include all colors of the color wheel including primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. We did this project to help us get comfortable with the graphic design software we would be using. We created shapes like circles, squares and triangles then filled them in with color to create the color wheel.

What did I learn?

I learned a lot about Adobe Illustrator while completing this project. Before this I had no experience using this software so this project was a very nice introduction. I learned about how to create basic shapes and fill in color which could possibly help me with future projects. After completing the project I feel a lot more comfortable using the software.

How did I do?

I felt like I did really well on the project. I followed the instructions well, even though I didn't really understand till I asked questions. After I asked questions and understood I felt like everything went really smoothly. Next time we complete a project on Adobe Illustrator I want to be able to make things go as smoothly as they did with this project.

Chase Scene

Chase Scene Project!

Chase Scene Project!  (Video Link)

I felt that the pre-production process for our product went pretty well. It was easy for me to come up with my three ideas and we even used bits and pieces of my ideas in our final video. While creating our video I came up with even more ideas along the way and some even made it into the final product as well. Our location was agreed upon by our whole group fairly. Although we planned on ending by the flex theater we ended up having to take our filming elsewhere due to classes, and ended our video at the end of the P.E hall.

My team and I decided on our roles based on just communicating our preferences. Thankfully, we each wanted to do different jobs and in the end we were all happy in our positions. Sometimes we would disagree on different ideas for the video and we would resolve the disagreements by coming up with more and more ideas until we could agree. During the filming of our video we had some trouble being able to film in some of our locations due to classes and we ended up having to come up with a total new plan for our ending.

Since I have gotten used to Premier Pro, piecing all the clips together was very simple. Afterwards my video was about thirty seconds over the maximum limit so I had to try and crop down my video to shorten the length. This process ended up creating many errors with my clips which was fairly frustrating, but in the end I was able to come up with a product that I was pleased with. I feel my editing skills have greatly improved since the beginning of the first quarter, before then I had never even edited a video. I hope to maybe work on my own projects to keep up with my editing skills on Premier Pro and other software.

I though my teams collaboration and communication skills were very well. We started to get comfortable with each other and shared our ideas even disagreeing with each other. I though we were good at telling each other our criticism and helping each other out to come up with ideas we all agreed on. I think we could have worked better on our time management because it took us quite a while to finish our pre production and filming stages. In the future I want to work more quickly and efficiently so I can have more time to edit the clips, review the project, and correct any errors.

AB Sequence

 AB Sequence Project!

AB Sequence Project! (Video Link)

I really enjoyed working on this project. I learned about how to use different shots and angles to represent traveling from point A to point B in a video and how to use film sequencing to prevent continuity errors. My partner and I brainstormed ideas as to how to create a video that would flow well and use different types of shots as well. We sketched out different shots and went out to where we were going to film to come up with our final rough draft. In the end our final project is what we came up with.

My editing process went pretty smoothly. It was a lot easier than last time because I am used to the software and was able to edit my video within two class hours. On some of my shots I had to trim then down because they were very long and boring. I didn't add any sound effects to my video and just added the music that I chose. My partner and I wanted to choose a simple concept and so we decided to go with Point A: Classroom, Point B: Restroom. We included filling out a planner, getting a signature, and walking to the restrooms.

I think me and partner did very well collaborating together to come up with ideas and complete the AB sequence project. We did a good job sharing ideas and changing things when we felt they needed to be changed instead of just going with the project unhappily. On my next project I think I want to make the acting more expressive and maybe try to use more interesting shots.

How to Print a Document

 How to print a document!

 Video Project! (Video Link)

In our group we tried to come up with ideas and agree on every decision we made towards our final product, which was the video. First off we assigned each other specific roles in our group and that helped organize ourselves a bit more. For our storyboard we used different types of shots to tell the story in a way that flowed naturally. Post-Production was very easy because we had some pretty good shots that we could easily just piece together to make our final video. I could not really find any good music choices so I ended up going with one that was calm and quiet because I could not find anything else to use in the normal music library.

Key decisions were made pretty easily because we all agreed on most of the major decisions in the production process. My role in the production process was as a cameraman and I was very happy in that role. I learned about camera angles, positions, and how to create a good shot. We used an iPad to record and we used Adobe Premiere Pro for the editing software. I thought Adobe Premiere Pro was pretty good and after getting used to it I thought it was pretty easy to use.

Professionally, our group was very good and we used communication and collaboration skills to share our own ideas and opinions and make sure we all agreed on what to do in preparation for the production of our video. We were pretty organized with out project management and we all played a role in the leadership of our group. I was also impressed with the skills our group put forth in the production of the video whether it be acting or recording. If I had to do something differently I think it would probably be to learn more about the editing software so that next time it would be a lot less confusing and I could add some more advanced editing techniques.  If I had to do something the same it would be the recordings/shots because I think in this project they came out very well and I was very happy with them. I will definitely use my experiences with the iPad/tripod and Adobe Premiere Pro to make the production of my next project a lot easier.

Sidewalk Chalk Project

 Sidewalk Chalk Project!

The sidewalk chalk project was a very fun, creative and imformative activity for me and the rest of the e-comm students. I had no idea that symbolism was used in so much of the artwork we see throughout history and just our everyday lives. I had to be creative to come up with ideas for my symbols and for how to include everyone in my team's symbol in our final group design.

When our group was coming up with our designs we each chose the one symbol that we felt was the best and represented ourselves the best. When we had chosen ours symbols we just started mindlessly drawing and sketching out different ideas for a final design, until we found one that incorporated all of our symbols in a fun and creative way.

In the courtyard we each started drawing our own symbols so that they fit into the final design we had chosen. First we started with the lion, then the shield, and after that we drew the symbols that went inside the shield which were the snake and the yin-yang. I am very proud of the design that our team was able to come up with. When we were drawing the design we chose our colors. We chose our colors kind of carelessly and didn't put much thought into it besides just choosing colors that were contrasting so our symbols would stand out more. Sadly, we were not able to finish out final design but I am still proud of the end result.

The team aspect of this activity went very well for me. The collaboration was very good and we were each able to show our ideas and speak our opinions and thoughts before finally creating and agreeing on a final design. Although our communication could have been better, it got the job done and we were able to do the project successfully.
